Our History

The Chamber was established in 1984 by a group of local business people to help develop the local business community. Instrumental in setting up Tallaght Chamber were Kevin Molloy of the Molloy Group, Joe Gallagher, Bank of Ireland, Tallaght, Noel McElhatton of Johnson & Johnson and Brian O'Reilly of BP O'Reilly & Co. Kevin Molloy subsequently became the first President.

In 1994 the Chamber appointed its first full time Chief Executive, Gerry Doyle, leased offices at IDA Whitestown Industrial Estate and dramatically expanded services to members.

In 1995 the Chamber changed its name to South Dublin Chamber and became the second Chamber in Ireland to receive accreditation under the CCI quality programme in 1996. In 1999 the Chamber purchased Tallaght Business Centre from the IDA and it has become a successful commercial concern. In 2003 we were named Ireland's Chamber of the Year and following on to represent Ireland as a finalist in the World Chamber Competition in Canada.

In 2005 we celebrated our 21st year as 'The Voice of Business in South Dublin.'

Working in partnership with other agencies and private business we have shared many past successes including:

  • Obtaining tax-designated status for the Tallaght Town Centre leading to the construction of The Square Shopping Centre. This in turn has seen a major influx of new businesses to the area over the last decade.
  • Locating and building of the Institute of Technology, Tallaght.
  • The development of a Regional Teaching Hospital at Tallaght.
  • The location of the National Digital Park in Citywest.
  • Involved in pioneering new business development services for the small and medium business sector.
  • Launched the 'South Dublin Development Strategy 2001-2016, currently being developed.
  • Supported the South Dublin County Council on the development of Grange Castle.

In 2007 South Dublin Chamber called for meaningful reform of local Government as a means of driving the local economy.
