Transport 21
South Dublin Chamber warmly welcomes the Transport 21 initiative but cautions that any delay in its implementation will have a major impact on the economic competitiveness of the county. If implemented in full on time and within budget this plan has the potential to reshape transport in Ireland. South Dublin County will benefit enormously from this transport programme with the three major towns of Tallaght, Clondalkin and Lucan all being served with new transport systems plus a Luas extension to Citywest.
Metro West, the cross county metro is a major achievement for our county. From 2011 our three biggest towns Tallaght, Clondalkin and Lucan will be interconnected by a metro allowing over 238,000 people to move freely across the county. With a fitting bus service the villages of Saggart, Rathcoole and Newcastle plus Rathfarmham and Templeogue will be able to avail of this new service.
The upgrade of the N81 is particularly welcome and the extension of the Luas to Citywest will greatly improve the daily commute for the thousands of people living and working in Tallaght currently using public transport. The completion of the Kildare rail route project is long-awaited and this Dart will offer another viable option for people travelling to and from the county to the city. However the commitment to only part electrify the route is short-sighted and needs to be addressed. Lucan with a new Luas line and the opening of Adamstown station will have real alternatives to the daily wait in traffic.
A high quality bus services is vital for interconnections and seem to have been once again added in as an afterthought. For many the bus is the only form of public transport available to them and we urgently need an increase in the frequency and number of buses in the county, in particular it would be nice to see buses in our bus-free bus lanes. Many of the other proposals in the plan are very welcome too, including the upgrade of the M50 and its upgrading is long overdue. The interconnector and a central station in St Stephens Green are also very much needed and eagerly anticipated. A high quality infrastructure will not only serves our community but is a vital cog in our economic success; our county will finally be on a level playing field and perhaps even be better than most when this new infrastructure is implemented. A strong local economy means increased employment and a bright future for the citizens of South Dublin County. The full plan can be viewed on http://www.transport.ie.
